With breakthroughs in technology each year, from advancements in transport to secluded areas, wanderlusts can travel to new excursion preparation applications. Yet, there are some places that may stay off limits — and for good reason.

The sites below are from the vault featuring the highly coveted, secret formula for Coca-Cola to an island inhabited by thousands of snakes — among the most fascinating on earth. Some are briefly closed off from the people while others will remain thus permanently, meaning exploration will need to be run via imagination.

Located nine miles west of Harrogate in North Yorkshire, this Royal Air Force Station (RAF) covers about one square mile of moorland, or open place typically covered with grass. Run by the US National Security Agency (NSA), it’s thought to be the largest electronic monitoring station on the planet. Its distinctive golf ball constructions, officially known as radomes, are believed to covertly monitor and perhaps even intercept communications.
Controversy remains, notably among activists who are uncertain whether the secret activities conducted within the foundation are responsible, to the British people, or not unacceptable.
